Reduce cart abandonment in WooCommerce: checkout fixes and emails

Why roughly seven in ten carts are abandoned, which checkout problems you can actually fix, and the recovery emails that bring some of those shoppers back.

Short answer: how to reduce cart abandonment in WooCommerce

To reduce cart abandonment in WooCommerce, fix the checkout first and send recovery emails second. Show the full price including delivery before checkout, allow guest checkout, cut the form to the fields you really need, offer the payment methods your customers expect and make sure checkout is fast on mobile. Then add a three-email abandoned cart sequence (1 hour, 24 hours, 72 hours) through a plugin or your email platform, with consent handled properly.

Why shoppers abandon carts

Baymard Institute puts the average documented cart abandonment rate at 70.22%, based on 50 studies (Baymard's cart abandonment research). A large part of that is natural: in Baymard's survey of US shoppers, 42% had abandoned simply because they were just browsing or not ready to buy. You cannot fix that part, but you can fix the rest.

Reasons given by shoppers who did intend to buy (Baymard, US online shoppers, multiple answers allowed):

Reason for abandoning during checkout Share of shoppers
Extra costs too high (shipping, tax, fees) 40%
Delivery was too slow 20%
Didn't trust the site with card details 19%
Site wanted me to create an account 18%
Checkout too long or complicated 17%
Website had errors or crashed 17%
Returns policy not satisfactory 13%
Couldn't see or calculate total cost up front 12%
Credit card was declined 10%
Not enough payment methods 9%

Most of those are checkout design and operations problems, not email problems. Baymard estimates that the average large ecommerce site could gain a 35.26% increase in conversion rate through better checkout design alone. Recovery emails catch some of the remaining shoppers.

How to measure your own cart abandonment rate

Before changing anything, get a baseline. With GA4 ecommerce tracking in place, you need five events: add_to_cart, begin_checkout, add_shipping_info, add_payment_info and purchase.

  1. In GA4, go to Reports → Monetisation → Checkout journey, or build a Funnel exploration in Explore with those events as steps.
  2. Split by device category. A mobile drop-off between begin_checkout and add_shipping_info that is much worse than on desktop usually points to form or layout problems.
  3. Calculate the rate: cart abandonment = 1 − (purchases ÷ sessions with add_to_cart). Checkout abandonment = 1 − (purchases ÷ sessions with begin_checkout).
  4. Compare the step with the biggest drop to the reasons table above. A large drop at shipping means delivery cost or options; at payment it means methods, trust or a technical failure.
  5. Repeat monthly, and after every checkout change, so you know which fix actually worked.

If the numbers look implausible, such as more purchases than checkouts, check that the WooCommerce tracking plugin fires purchase only once on the thank-you page and that consent mode is not silently dropping events.

Fix the checkout or send emails? Your options

Option Effort Cost When it is enough
Checkout fixes in WooCommerce settings and theme 1–5 days Development time only Always do this first
Free plugin, e.g. Cart Abandonment Recovery for WooCommerce, Abandoned Cart Lite Hours Free; paid tiers add features Small store, simple emails sent from WordPress
Email platform with WooCommerce integration (Klaviyo, Mailchimp) 1–3 days Monthly plan by contacts; Klaviyo's free plan covers 250 active profiles and 500 sends a month You already use it for newsletters and want segments and reporting
Custom flows from your own customer data 1–4 weeks Project cost Many flows (browse, cart, post-purchase, win-back), ERP-based stock or B2B pricing in emails

Sending emails from WordPress through a plugin is fine for a few hundred emails a month, but configure proper SMTP or a transactional email service. Without SPF, DKIM and DMARC on your domain, recovery emails land in spam and the whole exercise is wasted.

Step by step: checkout fixes that cut cart abandonment

Work through these in WooCommerce before writing a single email. Setting names follow WooCommerce's settings documentation.

  • Guest checkout on. WooCommerce → Settings → Accounts & Privacy → tick "Allow customers to place orders without an account". Offer account creation after the order instead.
  • Show delivery costs early. Display a "Free delivery over £50" banner, a delivery estimate on product pages, and enable the shipping calculator on the cart page (WooCommerce → Settings → Shipping → Shipping settings, "Enable the shipping calculator on the cart page").
  • No surprises at the last step. Prices include VAT for consumers, and payment surcharges are avoided. In the UK and EU, surcharging consumer card payments is restricted anyway.
  • Shorter form. In the Checkout block, hide "Company" and "Address line 2" unless you sell B2B, and make phone optional if your courier does not need it. Every field you remove is one less reason to stop.
  • Address lookup. Postcode lookup in the UK and Netherlands saves typing and reduces delivery errors.
  • Express payments. Apple Pay and Google Pay on the cart and product pages, plus local methods such as iDEAL in the Netherlands or PayPal and Klarna in Germany. Our comparison of Stripe, Mollie and Adyen covers which provider offers what.
  • Trust near the button. Returns policy summary, delivery time, secure payment badges and a contact option.
  • Fast, error-free checkout. Check the browser console for JavaScript errors on checkout after every plugin update; one broken script can make the "Place order" button do nothing.
  • Clear errors. "Please enter a valid postcode" next to the field, not a red banner at the top of the page.
  • Persistent cart. Logged-in customers see the same cart on phone and laptop.

Recover failed and unpaid orders, not only abandoned carts

A second, often forgotten type of abandonment: the customer clicked "Place order" but the payment failed or was never completed. In WooCommerce these orders sit in Pending payment or Failed.

  • WooCommerce → Settings → Products → Inventory → Hold stock (minutes) sets how long unpaid orders keep stock reserved before being cancelled (60 minutes by default). Too short and slow 3-D Secure users lose their order; too long and stock looks unavailable.
  • Send a "Your payment didn't go through" email with a direct payment link for Failed and Pending orders. Many recovery plugins and email platforms do this; if not, it is a small custom job.
  • Watch for common gateway messages such as "Your card was declined." and "Your card has insufficient funds." in the order notes. If they spike after a plugin update, the problem is technical, not the customers.

The three abandoned cart emails that work

Capture the cart once the shopper has entered an email address in checkout and given consent, then send:

Email When Goal Content
1. Reminder 30–60 minutes after leaving Catch interruptions Product image, name, price, "Return to your basket" button, no discount
2. Reassurance About 24 hours Answer objections Delivery times and costs, returns policy, reviews, a question to reply to
3. Last chance 48–72 hours Convert the undecided Low stock note if true, optional single-use incentive (free delivery or a small discount) with expiry

Rules that keep the sequence effective and legal:

  • Stop the sequence the moment an order is placed, including orders by phone or in store if you can sync them.
  • Rebuild the cart from the link, with the same products, variations and quantities.
  • Check stock and price before sending; do not remind people about a sold-out item.
  • Use a real sender name and a reply-to address someone reads.
  • Add an unsubscribe link to every message and honour it across all flows.
  • Track recovered revenue per email in GA4 with UTM tags, and compare with a hold-out group if your platform allows it.

On consent: rules on marketing emails differ between the UK (PECR), Germany and the Netherlands, and a reminder about an unfinished purchase is usually treated as marketing. A consent checkbox next to the checkout email field, a line in your privacy notice and an easy opt-out are the practical minimum. The UK regulator's guidance on electronic mail marketing is a useful starting point.

What it costs to reduce cart abandonment

Recovery plugin set up, three emails designed and tested, SMTP and DNS records €300–€900
Email platform integration (Klaviyo or Mailchimp) with cart, failed-payment and welcome flows €800–€2,500
Checkout redesign with express payments, address lookup and custom cart €2,000–€6,000
Customer data platform with many lifecycle flows, ERP-based stock and segments quoted per project
